Why choose a trail at Mt St Elias?
Mt. St. Elias is located in the Kluane National Park Reserve in the southwest Yukon Territory, Canada. At 18,008 feet (5,489 meters), it is the second highest mountain in North America, and the ninth highest peak in the world. The mountain was named by George Vancouver in 1794 after his friend, Baron St. Elias, who was the Russian ambassador to Great Britain. The first ascent of Mt. St. Elias was made on July 31, 1897 by a party led by J. Norman Collie.
The mountain is a massive ice-capped peak, with more than 30 glaciers flowing down its slopes. The most popular route to the summit is via the North Ridge, which starts from the Donjek Glacier on the north side of the mountain. The climb is long and strenuous, involving a traverse of a glacier and a steep ascent up a rocky ridge. Other routes include the West Ridge and the South Ridge.
Mt. St. Elias is a popular destination for climbers and hikers, and offers some of the most challenging mountaineering in North America. The mountain is also home to a variety of wildlife, including Dall sheep, mountain goats, grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, and wolverines.
