Why hike at Appalachian Trail Conservancy ?
The appalachian trail conservancy (ATC) is a nonprofit, membership organization that preserves and manages the Appalachian Trail – a National Scenic Trail that runs from Georgia to Maine. The ATC works with federal, state, and local agencies to protect the trail corridor and surrounding lands, assists landowners with conservation easements, and educates the public about the trail and its importance.
The ATC was founded in 1925 by Benton MacKaye, who envisioned a long-distance trail that would connect people and communities from Georgia to Maine. The first section of the Appalachian Trail was completed in 1937, and today the trail spans more than 2,000 miles.
The ATC is responsible for maintaining the trail, which includes building and repairing shelters, maintaining trails and bridges, and removing debris from the path. The ATC also works to protect the trail corridor from development and other threats.
The ATC relies on volunteers and members to help maintain the trail and protect its resources. Members receive a variety of benefits, including discounts on gear, access to member-only events, and a subscription to the ATC’s magazine.
If you’re interested in preserving the Appalachian Trail – or just want to hike it – consider becoming a member of the ATC.
