Why choose a trail at Northern Forest Canoe Trail?

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) is a water trail that spans over 750 miles of rivers, lakes and ponds from the Adirondacks in New York to the Quoddy Head State Park in Maine. The trail winds through the forests and wilderness areas of New York, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick.

The NFCT is a designated National Scenic Trail and is open to canoeists, kayakers, and rafters. The trail is well-marked with signage and maps at each portage and take-out point. There are also campsites located along the trail where paddlers can stop for the night.

The Vermont section of the NFCT begins in North Hero on Lake Champlain and winds its way down the Missisquoi River to Richford. From there, the trail follows the Winooski River to Burlington. The final leg of the Vermont section takes paddlers up the Lamoille River to Morrisville.

The Vermont section of the NFCT is a beautiful and peaceful journey through some of the most remote areas of the state. The riverbanks are lined with tall trees and there are plenty of opportunities for wildlife sightings. Paddlers can also enjoy some of Vermont's famous covered bridges and small towns along the way.
