The hill was named for General Artemas Ward, who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. A fire tower was built on the summit in 1908, and it was used to spot fires in the surrounding area. The tower was destroyed by a fire in 1984, but has been rebuilt. There are several trails that lead to the summit of Ward Hill, and it is a popular hiking destination.
