The lake is fed by the Saskatchewan River and drained by the Nelson River. The lake has a number of islands, including Hecla Island and Grand Isle. The communities of Gimli, Manitoba and St. Laurent, Manitoba are located on the lake's shores.

Lake Manitoba is a popular tourist destination, with activities such as fishing, boating, and camping. The lake is also home to a variety of fish species, including walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, and white sucker.
