A Natural Wonder Awaits

spirit island is located on Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta. The island itself is small but mighty in its allure, surrounded by towering peaks and crystal-clear waters that reflect the grandeur of the landscape.

Getting There: A Journey Worth Taking

Reaching spirit island is an adventure in itself. While there are no hiking trails directly to the island due to its remote location, you can embark on a scenic boat tour from the Maligne Lake Boathouse. These tours provide an informative and awe-inspiring journey across the lake, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

For those who prefer a more active approach, kayaking or canoeing across Maligne Lake is another fantastic option. Paddling through these pristine waters allows you to immerse yourself fully in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Once you arrive at spirit island, you'll be greeted by one of the most photographed spots in Canada. The island's unique position amidst the azure waters and rugged mountain backdrop creates a picture-perfect scene that's nothing short of magical.

While visitors are not allowed to set foot on spirit island itself out of respect for its cultural significance to Indigenous peoples, you can still enjoy its splendor from designated viewing areas nearby. Take a moment to soak in the peaceful atmosphere and let the natural beauty inspire your spirit.

Plan Your Visit: Tips for Outdoor Enthusiasts

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to explore spirit island is during the summer months (June to September) when Maligne Lake is free of ice and boat tours are operational.
  • What to Bring: Dress in layers as weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Don't forget your camera, binoculars for wildlife spotting, and plenty of water.
