The falls are formed by the Sunwapta River, which descends from the Athabasca Glacier to the Columbia Icefield. The river drops over a cliff to form a horseshoe-shaped waterfall that is about wide and high. There are several other waterfalls in the area, including the Athabasca Falls and the Crowfoot Falls.
