The mountain has an elevation of 2,636 metres (8,645 ft) and is one of the most prominent peaks in the area. It was named in 1858 by James Hector after his employer, Sir George Simpson. The mountain is composed of sedimentary rock and is heavily glaciated. There are several glaciers on the mountain, including the Fairview Glacier, which is the largest on the mountain. The mountain can be accessed from several directions, including from Banff and Lake Louise.
